An audit is an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of a museum’s security. It addresses a specific need. It may be initiated either by the museum itself, by an authority to which the museum is subject (authorities), or by an insurer or a third party, such as a museum that plans to entrust it with works of art as part of an exhibition.
The auditor’s work consists of a risk analysis. The approach is concentric: the auditor’s attention is first directed to the country in which the museum is located, then to the region, the city, and the neighborhood, before focusing on the museum itself.
The auditor will examine the museum’s history in order to determine whether it has previously been affected by incidents or losses. In the same way, upcoming contextual factors (demonstrations, festivities, etc.) are taken into account.
The audit then focuses on evaluating the fundamental pillars of a security system, namely:
- human resources,
- structural measures,
- technological measures,
- and everything related to training and information.
This makes it possible to establish a comprehensive overview of the museum’s strengths and weaknesses.
